Gustavo Peña Velasco (born November 22, 1942 – died January 19, 2021) was a famous Mexican professional football player and coach. He was known for being a strong defender and for leading the Mexican national team.

Gustavo Peña was born in Talpa de Allende, Mexico. When he was young, he moved with his family to Guadalajara, a big city in Jalisco.
Sadly, Gustavo Peña passed away in Mexico City on January 19, 2021. He was 78 years old. He died from COVID-19 during the time when many people were getting sick in Mexico.
Playing Career
Gustavo Peña started his football journey with a local team called CD Oro. He played professional football for almost 20 years. He was a key player for several teams in Mexico's top league, the Primera División. These teams included Oro, Cruz Azul, Monterrey, and Club de Fútbol Laguna.
International Matches
Peña also played for the Mexican national team, also known as the "Selección de fútbol de México." He played in 82 international matches and scored 3 goals between 1961 and 1974. He was the captain of the team in two FIFA World Cup tournaments: the 1966 World Cup and the 1970 World Cup. Being a captain means he was the leader of the team on the field.
