The Hôtel Ritz is a very famous and fancy hotel in Paris, France. It's located in a beautiful square called Place Vendôme. Many people think it's one of the best and most luxurious hotels in the world! It's also part of a special group called "The Leading Hotels of the World".
The hotel has 159 rooms for guests. It was started in 1898 by a Swiss hotel expert named César Ritz. He worked with a famous chef, Auguste Escoffier. The hotel was built behind the front of an old 18th-century townhouse. It looks out onto one of Paris's main squares.
It was one of the first hotels in Europe to offer a private bathroom, a telephone, and electricity in every room. This made it very famous for its luxury. Many important people have stayed there. These include royalty, politicians, writers, movie stars, and singers.
Some of the hotel's special suites are named after famous guests. For example, there are suites named after Coco Chanel and Ernest Hemingway. They both lived at the hotel for many years. One of the bars, Bar Hemingway, is dedicated to the writer Ernest Hemingway.

The Ritz is known as one of the most expensive hotels in Paris. In 2011, a basic room cost about €850 (around $900 US dollars) per night. Special suites could cost from €3,600 to €13,900 (around $3,800 to $14,800 US dollars) per night. The Suite Impériale is the most expensive one. The Ritz hotel employs more than 600 people to keep everything running smoothly.
Dining at L'Espadon
L'Espadon is the hotel's world-famous restaurant. It's a place where many new chefs want to learn. They come to the nearby Ritz-Escoffier School to study. The food is prepared by the award-winning chef Michel Roth. He is the ninth head chef of the hotel. In 2009, the restaurant received a second star from the important Michelin Red Guide. This shows how excellent its food is.
History of the Ritz Paris
The Hotel During World War II
During the Second World War, the German air force, called the Luftwaffe, used the hotel. It became their main office in Paris.
Changes in Ownership
César Ritz's son, Charles, passed away in 1976. The last family members who owned the hotel sold it in 1979. An Egyptian businessman named Mohamed Al-Fayed bought it. In August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, and Al-Fayed's son, Dodi, had dinner at the hotel. This was just before they were in a car accident.
Recent Renovations
The hotel was completely closed for a big renovation. It shut its doors on August 1, 2012. It reopened in March 2016, after almost two years of work.
The Ritz in Pop Culture
The Ritz Paris is a symbol of luxury and high society. Because of this, it has appeared in many books, plays, and movies. For example, it's mentioned in F. Scott Fitzgerald's book Tender Is The Night. It's also in Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. The hotel is featured in the play Semi-Monde by Noël Coward. You can also see it in films like Billy Wilder's 1957 comedy Love in the Afternoon. Another movie is William Wyler's 1966 comedy How to Steal a Million.
