Hörby Municipality (Hörby kommun) is a local area in southern Sweden. It is located in the central part of Skåne County. The main town and administrative center of the municipality is Hörby.

This municipality was formed by joining ten smaller areas over time. These mergers happened in 1952, 1969, and 1974.

Exploring Hörby's Geography

The area around Hörby has a mix of different landscapes. You can find some forests, peaceful lakes, and flowing streams. There are also many farms and wild areas with animals. Hörby is known for having lots of meadows, which are open fields of grass.

A Look at Hörby's History

Some people believe that the town of Hörby started around the 9th century AD. However, no one knows the exact date it was founded. During the Middle Ages, Hörby became an important trading center. This was because of its perfect location right in the middle of Skåne.

The name "Hörby" comes from an old word, "horg." This word means "barrow" or "mound" today. As the name suggests, the forests around Hörby are full of ancient burial mounds. Some of these mounds are from the Bronze Age. There are also old places where people practiced the pre-Christian religion called asatru. The nearby village of Höör also got its name from the same old word.

Hörby's Culture and Traditions

Hörby Municipality still keeps many of its old cultural traditions alive in its villages.

Hörby is famous for its old radio transmitting station. This station was once used to send out radio signals on old MF radios. Today, radio and TV signals are still sent from a station in Östra Sallerup. This place is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) south of Hörby town. However, the old MF radio signals are now sent from a newer station in Sölvesborg, which opened in 1985.

Every year, on the first Wednesday and Thursday in July, a special event takes place. It's called the Hörby Market (Hörby Marknad). This market has been held since 1748! Thousands of people visit it every year. It is one of the three most important traditional markets in Skåne, along with the markets in Kivik and Sjöbo.

Two famous people are connected to Hörby. The well-known author Victoria Benedictsson (1850-1888) was from Hörby. Also, Håkan Dahlby, a famous athlete, was born in Västerstad, which is in Hörby municipality.
