Haakon VII facts for kids
Haakon VII was the King of Norway for a long time, from 1905 until he passed away in 1957. He was born as a prince in Copenhagen, Denmark. His original name was Prince Carl. His father later became King Frederick VIII of Denmark, and his mother was Louise of Sweden. Prince Carl went to the Royal Danish Naval Academy and worked in the Royal Danish Navy.

King During World Wars
King Haakon VII was the leader of Norway during two very important times: World War I and World War II.
Standing Up to Invasion
During World War II, Norway was invaded by Germany. The German forces tried to make King Haakon give up his throne. This is called "abdicating." But King Haakon bravely refused to give in. His strong decision encouraged the people of Norway to fight against the German occupation.
Return to Norway
Because of the war, King Haakon VII had to leave Norway and live in England for a while. This is called being in "exile." He returned to Norway in June 1945, after the war ended.
His Passing
King Haakon VII died on September 21, 1957. He passed away at the Royal Palace in Oslo.
