Habbersett is a well-known brand that makes meat products. It started way back in 1863! They are most famous for making something called scrapple. The company began in a place called Middletown (Media) in Pennsylvania. Later, it moved to Bridgeville, Delaware. Today, Habbersett is owned by a company called Jones Dairy Farm.

What Habbersett Makes

Habbersett mainly makes meat products. Their most popular product is scrapple. Scrapple is a special pork product. It's very popular in many parts of the United States. You can find it in places like Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, southern New York, and the Delmarva Peninsula.

Habbersett also makes beef scrapple for those who prefer it. Habbersett and another brand called Rapa are the two biggest scrapple makers. Both brands are owned by Jones Dairy Farm. You can find their products in most stores in the mid-Atlantic region. Some food experts, like Joshua Ozersky, even thought Habbersett made the best scrapple!

Habbersett's Story: A Look Back

The former president of Habbersett, Ed Habbersett, once said that scrapple was created a long time ago. He believed it came about because of special conditions in colonial America.

How Habbersett Started

In 1863, a person named Isaac S. Habbersett started making scrapple for many people. He began this in Middletown (Media), which is in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Habbersett is one of the oldest companies that makes scrapple. It's amazing how little the product has changed since it first started!

Changes Over Time

In 1926, another scrapple brand called Rapa started making its products in Delaware. Habbersett and Rapa became the two biggest brands in the Philadelphia scrapple market. Habbersett sold almost half of all the scrapple there. Rapa sold about a quarter.

In 1981, a company from Wisconsin called Jones Dairy Farm bought Rapa. A few years later, in 1985, another company named Johnsonville Foods bought Habbersett. But then, in 1988, Johnsonville Foods sold Habbersett to Jones Dairy Farm.

After buying Habbersett, Jones Dairy Farm closed the original factory in Middletown. They moved all the production to Bridgeville, Delaware. Now, both Habbersett and Rapa make their meats in the same building. This building is located at 103 S Railroad Ave in Bridgeville. Even though they are in the same place, the two brands are still made separately.
