Discovering Bridgeville's Past

Bridgeville is the oldest community in the western part of Sussex County. People were already farming here in the early 1700s. A small group of homes grew up along what is now Main Street. This settlement was first called "Bridge Branch." This name came from a nearby stream that had a bridge built over it as early as 1730.

By 1804, the community was big enough to get its own post office. In 1810, the town was officially named "Bridgeville." In the early 1800s, the town had businesses like a water-powered mill and a fruit-drying business. Bridgeville grew much faster when the Delaware Railroad arrived in 1856. William Cannon (who later became a governor) helped plan the town's growth. By 1900, Bridgeville had 613 residents.

Many historic buildings in Bridgeville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Bridgeville Historic District, the Bridgeville Public Library, and the Old Bridgeville Fire House.
