Habersham Memorial Hall is a special old building in Atlanta, Georgia. It's named after Joseph Habersham, an important person from Georgia's past. The building was designed by Henry Hornbostel. It was built to be the main meeting place for a group called the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Construction of the hall happened between 1922 and 1923. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it's recognized as a very important historical site.

The Story of Habersham Hall

How the Building Came to Be

On February 12, 1900, a group called the Joseph Habersham Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was started. This group was formed in Atlanta. One of its founders was the wife of Allen D. Candler, who was the Governor of Georgia at the time.

The chapter was named after Joseph Habersham. He was a politician from Georgia. He also fought as a soldier in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He even served as the United States Postmaster General.

Building a Memorial

On January 14, 1922, the first stone for the new building was put in place. This is called a cornerstone. The building was finished the next year, in 1923. The group built it "as a memorial to the Heroes of all Wars in which Georgia has participated." This means it was built to remember brave people who fought in wars.

Henry Hornbostel was the architect who designed the building. He made it look like an older house in Savannah, Georgia. That house, called the Bulloch–Habersham House, was built in 1819 but was torn down in 1916. In April 1923, Habersham Hall hosted a big meeting for the Georgia Daughters of the American Revolution.

A Recognized Historic Place

On June 7, 1974, Habersham Memorial Hall was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings and places that are important to American history. In the same year, a special Georgia historical marker was placed near the building. These markers tell people about the history of the spot.

What the Building Looks Like

Outside the Hall

The front of Habersham Memorial Hall is about 200 feet long. It's a two-story building. The front has special French doors under a large porch. This porch has six tall columns. These columns are a mix of two styles, called Ionic and Corinthian.

The windows on the second floor have decorative guard rails made of cast iron. The outside of the building is made of brick. It used to be covered in white stucco, which is a type of plaster. This stucco has been removed, so the bricks now have a slight old look, called a patina. The original house it copied, the Bulloch–Habersham House, was built in the Federal style. This style was popular in the early days of the United States.
