Haddam was started in 1869. It was named after Haddam, Connecticut. A nearby town called West Haddam joined with Haddam in 1874.

The old Haddam High School mascot was the Haddam Hounds. The North Central Junior High mascot was the Wildcats. The North Central High School mascot was the Cougars.
