History of Mahaska
Mahaska was started in 1887 by a person named L. Bonham. It is believed that the city was named after Chief Mahaska, a famous Native American leader. The first post office in Mahaska opened its doors in December 1887.
The Sixth Principal Meridian
About one mile northwest of Mahaska, there is a very important spot called the Sixth Principal Meridian. This spot was marked in 1856. It was the starting point for surveying (measuring) all the land in Kansas, Nebraska, most of Wyoming, and parts of Colorado and South Dakota. Think of it as a main starting line for drawing maps of huge areas! The original marker was found again in 1976, and a new monument was put there in 1987.
