Hailey Baptiste (born November 3, 2001) is an American professional tennis player. She is known for her powerful right-handed play. Hailey has achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 80. She has also done well in doubles, reaching No. 92 in the world.

Hailey has won several titles throughout her career. This includes one doubles title on the main WTA Tour, two on the WTA Challenger Tour, and four singles and four doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit.

Hailey's Tennis Journey

Early Career as a Junior Player

Hailey Baptiste started playing tennis at a young age. As a junior player, she showed great promise. She reached her highest junior ranking of No. 38 in the world in January 2018. One of her biggest achievements as a junior was finishing as a runner-up in the doubles tournament at the US Open in 2018.

Starting on the Professional Tour (2019-2022)

Hailey began her professional journey on the WTA Tour.

  • First Big Win: In 2019, she made her main-draw debut at the Washington Open. She had a huge win against Madison Keys, a well-known player who had reached a Grand Slam final.
  • Grand Slam Debut: In 2020, Hailey played in her first major tournament, the US Open, after getting a special invitation called a wildcard.
  • WTA 1000 Debut: She also played in her first WTA 1000 event, the 2021 Miami Open, in 2021.
  • First Grand Slam Victory: At the 2021 French Open, she successfully made it through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw. There, she earned her first win at a major tournament by defeating Anna Blinkova.

Breaking into the Top 100 (2023-2024)

The years 2023 and 2024 were very important for Hailey.

  • More Big Tournament Appearances: She received a wildcard to play in the main draw of the 2023 Miami Open.
  • Success at WTA 1000 Events: At the 2023 Guadalajara Open, a WTA 1000 tournament, she won two matches. She beat Lya Isabel Fernández Olivares and then defeated Karolína Plíšková for the second time that year. This helped her reach the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time.
  • Reaching the Top 100: After winning her first-round match at the 2024 Indian Wells Open in March 2024, Hailey officially entered the top 100 players in the world! This was a big milestone in her career.
  • More Grand Slam Wins: At the 2024 French Open, she got into the main draw as a "lucky loser" (meaning she lost in qualifying but got a spot because another player pulled out). She then won her second match at this major, beating Kayla Day.
  • Beating Top Players: Hailey continued to impress. At the WTA 500 Korea Open, she defeated fellow American player Sloane Stephens. She also won a first-round match at the WTA 1000 China Open.
  • First Top 10 Victory: A huge moment came at the 2024 Wuhan Open. As a qualifier, she defeated Barbora Krejčíková, who was ranked in the top 10. This was Hailey's first win against a top 10 player! She managed to come back from a tough situation in the second set to win the match.

Playing for a Team: World Team Tennis

In 2020, Hailey Baptiste joined World TeamTennis. This is a special league where teams of male and female players compete together. She started as an alternate for the Vegas Rollers team. Later, she became part of the main roster for the New York Empire team during the 2020 season.
