Haim Ernst Wertheimer (Hebrew: חיים ארנסט ורטהיימר; August 24, 1893 – March 23, 1978) was an Israeli biochemist. This means he was a scientist who studied the chemistry of living things. He is known for his important work on how our bodies use and store fat.
Early Life and Studies
Haim Ernst Wertheimer was born in Bühl, Germany, in 1893. He grew up and went to school in his hometown and in Baden-Baden.
In 1912, he started studying medicine. He studied in cities like Berlin, Bonn, and Kiel. His studies were paused when World War I began. During the war, he served as a doctor. He helped soldiers in places like Flanders and Italy. For his service, he received awards, including the Iron Cross. After the war, he finished his medical studies at Heidelberg University.
Medical Career and Research
From 1920 to 1921, Dr. Wertheimer worked as a doctor. He cared for children at an orphanage in Berlin. Later, he joined the Institute for Physiology at the University of Halle. This is where he began his important research.
In the 1930s, the Nazi party gained power in Germany. Because of this, Dr. Wertheimer lost his job. In 1934, he moved to Mandate Palestine, which is now Israel. He started working at the Hadassah Medical School in Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He became the temporary director of the Chemistry Laboratory there.
Dr. Wertheimer continued his work at the Hadassah Medical Center until 1963. He even served as the dean of the medical school in the 1950s. He is often called the "father" of the study of fat metabolism. This means he was a very important pioneer in understanding how our bodies process fats.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Wertheimer received several important awards for his scientific contributions:
- In 1956, he was given the Israel Prize. This is one of Israel's highest honors. He received it for his work in medicine.
- In 1964, he was awarded the Solomon Bublick Award. This award is given by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
