History of Haines
Haines was officially mapped out in 1885 or 1886. This happened when the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company built its rail line through the area. Before the railroad, Haines was a stage stop. This means it was a place where horse-drawn carriages, called stages, would stop for travelers to rest or change horses.

Haines is located in Oregon. The United States Census Bureau says the city covers about 0.76 square miles (1.96 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no water.
