Haiwee (pronounced "HIGH-wee") is a small, quiet place in Inyo County, California. It's not a big city with a mayor, but rather an unincorporated community, which means it's a small settlement without its own local government. The name "Haiwee" comes from the Timbisha language, meaning "Dove." It's located in a beautiful area, about 24 miles (39 km) south of Keeler, and sits high up at 4,075 feet (1,242 meters) above sea level.

The Story of Haiwee
Haiwee has had a few different names over time, like "McGuire's," "Haiwai," "Hawaii," and "Hayways."
Early Days and Conflicts
The story of Haiwee began in 1864. It started as a resting spot called Haiwai Meadows. This spot was on the road that connected Visalia to the Owens Valley. A man named McGuire, along with his wife and young son, ran this stop.
Sadly, on January 1, 1865, McGuire's wife and son were killed during a conflict while he was away. In response, local settlers formed a group to protect themselves. This led to a conflict on January 6, 1865, known as the Owens Lake Massacre. This event was one of the last major clashes in the Owens Valley Indian War.
Moving the Town
The original Haiwai Meadows and the first settlement site are now covered by the water of the Haiwee Reservoir. Because of this, the town of Haiwee had to move to a new location, west of the reservoir.
A post office served Haiwee from 1906 to 1913. It even moved its location once in 1909.
How Many People Live Here?
According to the 2020 census, about 25 people live in Haiwee.
Weather in Haiwee
Haiwee has a type of weather called a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (also known as Csa). This means that the winters are cold, and the summers are very hot.
Temperature Changes
Because Haiwee is high up and the air isn't very humid, it experiences big temperature swings between day and night. It's common for the temperature to change by as much as 30°F (about 17°C) from the warmest part of the day to the coolest part of the night.
