The History of Haller Lake
The native Duwamish people had their own name for the lake: "Calmed Down a Little." This name, seesáhLtub in their Lushootseed language, might have meant the lake was a safe place to hide during times of trouble, like slave raids. Later, in the 1880s, early settlers called it Welch Lake after a British immigrant named John Welch claimed the land.
About the Lake Itself
Haller Lake is located between N. 128th Street to the north and N. 122nd Street to the south. To the west is Densmore Avenue N., and to the east is Corliss Avenue N.
The lake covers about 15 acres (6 hectares). It holds about 247 acre-feet of water, and its deepest point is about 36 feet (11 meters). Most of the shoreline around the lake is private property. However, there are two public spots where people can access the lake: one on the north shore at Meridian Avenue N. and another on the west side at N. 125th Street.
The lake gets water from an area of about 280 acres (113 hectares) around it. Water leaves Haller Lake through a special control structure on its west side. This water then flows into Lake Union.
The Haller Lake Neighborhood
The Haller Lake neighborhood has clear boundaries. To the north, it reaches N. 145th Street, and beyond that is the city of Shoreline. To the south, it extends to N. Northgate Way, with the Licton Springs neighborhood just beyond. On the west, the neighborhood is bordered by Washington State Route 99 (also known as Aurora Avenue), and past that is Bitter Lake. To the east, the boundary is Interstate 5, and on the other side is Jackson Park.
