Hallie is a small town located in Chippewa County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2010, about 161 people lived there.
Back in 2000, the town of Hallie was much bigger, with a population of 4,703 people. But in 2003, most of the town became a new village called Lake Hallie. This new village took almost all of the people, leaving Hallie as a much smaller town.
Hallie's Early Days
The area that is now the Town of Hallie was first mapped out in 1848 by people working for the U.S. government. They used tools like a Gunter's chain (a long measuring chain) and a Solar compass to mark all the important points.
In 1849, a surveyor wrote down what the land was like. He said the area was "rolling," meaning it had gentle hills. The soil was sandy, and there were many trees like white oak, black ash, and white pine.
Life by the River
The surveyor also described the Chippewa River in the area. He noted that the river had "rapids," which are fast-flowing parts. Lumbermen could safely float logs and wood products down these rapids.
The river dropped about 25 feet over a short distance. This drop was perfect for creating water power. A company owned by James Allen used this power for their sawmill. They had four saws working and were building a mill to make thin strips of wood.
Near the river's falls, there was a small settlement. It had a store, a tavern (like an inn), a Blacksmith shop, and several houses. People also used a pond in the area for hunting deer at night.
Where Hallie Is Located
The town of Hallie is found on the southern edge of Chippewa County. To its south is Eau Claire County.
The village of Lake Hallie borders the town to the north and west. This village used to be part of the town of Hallie. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Hallie covers about 19.3 square kilometers (about 7.5 square miles) of land.
