Hallsville is a city in Boone County, Missouri. It is part of the larger Columbia area. In 2020, about 1,614 people lived there.
Southeast of Hallsville, you can find the Mount Zion Church and Cemetery. This place was important during the Civil War. A battle called the Battle of Mount Zion Church happened there.

History of Hallsville
Hallsville was started in 1866. It was named after its first postmaster, Judge John W. Hall. The town grew naturally around a store and a blacksmith shop. It was not planned out on a map at first.
The Columbia Terminal Railroad tried to start a town called Hickman nearby. They even built a train station there. But Hallsville kept growing, and Hickman did not.
Early Days of Hallsville
In 1882, a local historian named Colonel William F. Switzler wrote about Hallsville. He said it had five stores, a harness shop, and a blacksmith shop. At that time, there were no churches or schools yet. The population was small, with only 65 people living there.
Mount Zion Church and the Civil War
During the Civil War, on September 22, 1863, the Mount Zion Church was burned down. This church is located east of Hallsville. Some people said it was burned by northern troops because they thought it was a hiding place for "bushwhackers" (guerrilla fighters).
The church was rebuilt in 1867. Later, it was torn down and rebuilt again in 1903. The church still stands today.
Famous Painter from Hallsville
Hallsville is also the hometown of Charles Morgenthaler. He was a famous painter in the 20th century. Charles Morgenthaler studied art at the University of Missouri and the Art Institute of Chicago. He later moved to St. Louis. There, he became a successful artist, known for his illustrations and large wall paintings.
