Ham Tae-young (October 22, 1873 – October 24, 1964) was an important South Korean politician, a pastor, and a leader of the Presbyterian Church of Korea. He served as the third vice president of South Korea from 1952 to 1956. He was also a judge during the Korean Empire and a brave leader who fought for Korea's freedom when it was ruled by Japan.

Early Life and Public Service

Ham Tae-young was born in 1873 in a place called Musan, which was part of Korea at the time. He grew up to become a judge during the Korean Empire.

When Ham Tae-young was a judge, he made a big decision that saved the life of a young man named Rhee Syng-man. Years later, Syngman Rhee would become the very first president of South Korea!

After Korea was taken over by Japan in 1910, Ham Tae-young decided to dedicate his life to helping his country become free again.

Fighting for Independence

Ham Tae-young was a key figure in the March 1st Movement. This was a huge peaceful protest in 1919 where Koreans bravely demanded their independence from Japan. He was one of the 48 main representatives who organized this important event.

Because of his efforts to free Korea, Ham Tae-young was arrested and put in jail several times by the Japanese government. He also played a big role in Christianity in Korea. He stood up against the Japanese government when they tried to force Koreans to follow certain Japanese religious rituals.

Building a New Nation

After Japan lost World War II, Korea finally became independent. Ham Tae-young was very involved in creating the new country of South Korea. He also helped expand Christian groups and organizations in the country.

His first job in the new government was leading the audit committee. This group checked how the government was spending money.

During the Korean War, the first president, Rhee Syng-man, asked Ham Tae-young to be his running mate for the election. They won, and Ham Tae-young became the third vice president of South Korea. He served in this important role from 1952 to 1956.

Later Life and Legacy

After his time as vice president, Ham Tae-young retired from public service. He received a special award called the Order of Merit for National Foundation. This award honors people who have done great things for their country.

Ham Tae-young passed away peacefully in 1964 at the age of 91. His death was honored with a special ceremony that lasted seven days. One of his sons, Hahm Pyong-Choon, also became a well-known politician and scholar in South Korea.
