Hamed Abdel Fattah Gohar (born November 15, 1907 – died June 17, 1992) was a famous Egyptian oceanographer, scientist, and TV presenter. He was known for his TV show The World of the Seas, which ran for over 18 years.

He loved the sea so much that he dedicated his whole life to studying it. Hamed Gohar started the very first big research projects about the ocean in Egypt and other Arab countries. From 1931 to 1939, he studied soft corals called Xenia in the Red Sea. He even published a paper in a famous science magazine called Nature in 1934. This paper was about how fish and sea anemones work together.

His long research on soft corals in Hurghada helped him earn a high degree from Cambridge. This was a great honor for his independent scientific work.

Early Life and Education

Hamed Abdel Fattah Gohar was born in Cairo, Egypt, on November 15, 1907. He went to the Islamic Charitable Society School for his first studies. Later, he attended the Royal Secondary School, where he finished his high school education in 1925. This was the same year the Egyptian University was founded.

Gohar first joined the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University. He did very well in his first year. However, he later decided to switch to the Faculty of Sciences. There, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with top honors. After graduating, he became a teaching assistant in the Department of Animal Sciences.

In 1931, just two years after he graduated, he wrote his first master's thesis. This paper was about the tiny parts and tissues of glands in rabbits.

After this, Gohar moved to work at the Marine Biology Station in Hurghada. He continued his scientific research on the amazing creatures of the Red Sea. He earned a doctorate degree in this field of knowledge. Many believe he was the first person in Egypt to achieve such a degree in marine science.

Important Scientific Work

Hamed Gohar made many important contributions to science in Egypt and the Arab world.

  • About sixty years ago, he started the first large-scale studies of marine life in Egypt and the Arab region.
  • He managed the marine life station in Hurghada from when it first opened for forty years.
  • He created a marine museum filled with collections of animals and plants from the Red Sea. He also built a library with many important books for studying the Red Sea.
  • He set up the Institute of Aquarium at Ataka in Suez. He also started another museum there to show Red Sea life.
  • In 1970, he worked as an advisor for science and technology at the Arab League.
  • He became a member of the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo in 1973.
  • He helped create Arabic science dictionaries for the Arabic Language Academy. One important work was the Biology Dictionary, which took eight years to prepare (1976-1984). Many leading Arab scientists also worked on this project.

Hamed Gohar had a very popular weekly television program called The World of the Seas. It was shown every Friday and ran for 18 years! In the show, he would present films about different marine creatures. He would explain what was happening in the videos. He also introduced the different types of animals, their habits, and their special qualities.

He always started his program with the phrase "Good evening." He said this phrase in a strong and unique way. A famous artist named Saeed Saleh even copied him in the play Al Ayal Kibrit (The Kids Have Grown Up). This happened during a phone call where his character imitated Gohar's voice.
