Hamel is a small village located in Madison County, Illinois, in the United States. In 2020, about 929 people lived there. This was more than the 816 people who lived there in 2010. Hamel is part of the larger St. Louis area, often called the Metro East in Illinois.

Hamel's Location and Size

Hamel is in the northeast part of Madison County. A major highway called Interstate 55 runs through the east side of the village. This highway can take you about 30 miles southwest to St. Louis or 65 miles north to Springfield, which is the capital city of Illinois.

Another road, Illinois Route 140, goes through the middle of Hamel. It is known as State Street in the village. This route goes about 23 miles east to Greenville and 19 miles west to Alton.

The village of Hamel covers a total area of about 1.20 square miles (3.10 square kilometers). Only a very small part of this area is water. Water from Hamel flows south into Silver Creek, which then joins the Kaskaskia River.
