People have different ideas about how Greenville got its name. Some think it was named after Greenville, North Carolina. That city was named after a Revolutionary War general. Others say an early settler named Thomas White called it "so green and nice." Another idea is that it was named after Green P. Rice, the town's first merchant.

Greenville became the main city of Bond County in 1821. The previous main city, Perryville, became part of another county. So, a new main city was needed. George Davidson offered land for the county government. His offer was accepted, and a courthouse was built in 1821.
