Hamilton is a city in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. It is located right across the Mississippi River from Keokuk, Iowa. In 2020, about 2,753 people lived in Hamilton. It is the biggest city in Hancock County.

History of Hamilton
Hamilton was first planned out in 1852 by several people, including Samuel Gordon and Bryant Bartlett. It became an official town in 1854. Later, in 1859, it was re-established as a city. The town was named after Artois Hamilton, who was important in its early days.
Geography of Hamilton
Hamilton covers a total area of about 5.36 square miles (13.87 square kilometers). A large part of this area, about 1.79 square miles (4.65 square kilometers), is water.
Mississippi River and Lock & Dam 19
Hamilton and Keokuk share a special structure on the Mississippi River called Lock & Dam 19. This dam has the largest drop in water level of any dam on the Mississippi River. The power plant at the dam creates a lot of electricity for the city of St. Louis, Missouri. Above the dam, a wide area of water called Lake Cooper is formed. This lake is the widest part of the Mississippi River between Montrose, Iowa, and Nauvoo, Illinois.

Education in Hamilton
Hamilton has its own school district, Hamilton Community Unit School District #328. This district includes Hamilton Elementary, Hamilton Junior High School, and Hamilton High School.
School Sports and Teams
The school sports teams used to be called the Cardinals. However, they are now changing to the Titans. This change happened because Hamilton High School joined with Warsaw and Nauvoo schools for sports. Some sports, like Scholastic Bowl and junior high/elementary sports, will still be called the Cardinals. In 2008, the new combined girls' basketball team, West Hancock (which included players from Hamilton, Warsaw, and Nauvoo-Colusa), won the IHSA Class 2A Championship. This was their first year playing together and their first championship win!
Notable People from Hamilton
- Russell Lee Arms: An actor and singer who was on the TV show Your Hit Parade. He lived in Hamilton later in his life.
- John Brock: A baseball catcher who played for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- Alden W. Clausen: He was the president of the World Bank and the CEO of Bank of America.
