Hamley is a small area, called a locality, in the Australian state of South Australia. It is found on the Yorke Peninsula, just south of the town of Moonta. Hamley is about 130 kilometers north-west of the main city, Adelaide city centre.
About Hamley
Hamley is part of a larger area managed by the Copper Coast Council. This council helps run local services. For government, Hamley is in the federal Division of Grey and the state electoral district of Narungga. These are the areas that choose representatives for the Australian Parliament and the South Australian Parliament.
The boundaries for Hamley were officially set in January 1999. This was done to recognize the name that had been used for a long time.
Protecting Hamley's History
A special thing about Hamley is that it's inside a very old and important place called the Moonta Mines State Heritage Area. Because of this, how land is used and what can be built in Hamley is carefully controlled. This is to make sure the area's "historic character and cultural significance" are kept safe. It means that new buildings or changes must fit in with the old look and feel of the mining history.
Hamley's Mining Past
Hamley is famous for the Hamley Mine, which was first known as the Karkarilla Mine. This mine was one of the biggest in the Moonta-Wallaroo region. Over its lifetime, it produced an amazing 10,000 tonnes of copper!
The mine was most active from 1862 to 1888. After that, it was worked by smaller groups of miners who paid to use it. In 1914, the mine was sold to another company.
The Hamley Tramway
From 1869 to 1930, Hamley was connected to East Moonta and Moonta Bay by a horse tramway. This was like a small railway where horses pulled wagons. Today, the old sites of the Hamley mine and its tramway are important stops on the Moonta Heritage Trail. This trail helps people learn about the area's rich mining history.
