East Moonta is a small country area in South Australia. It's found at the top of the Yorke Peninsula. Think of it as a smaller neighbor to the town of Moonta. This area is part of the Copper Coast Council.

About East Moonta

This modern area got its name and borders in January 1999. East Moonta is used for a few different things. Some parts are for protecting old buildings and history, which is called cultural heritage conservation. Other parts are for farming, like growing crops or raising animals. There are also areas where people live in homes.

What the Land is Used For

A special part of East Moonta is the Moonta Mines State Heritage Area. This is a historic site on the western side of the area. Rules are in place to make sure any new buildings or changes help keep the "historic character and cultural significance" of this important place.

On the north-east side, the land is mostly for farming. This means it's used for "agricultural production" and "grazing" animals on big pieces of land. On the south-west side, south of Arthurton Road, most of the land is for homes. Here, you'll find "detached dwellings on large allotments," which means separate houses on big blocks of land. The Moonta Gun Club is also located on Arthurton Road in East Moonta.

East Moonta's History

East Moonta used to be connected to Moonta and Moonta Bay by a special tramway. This tramway was pulled by horses and ran from 1869 until 1930.

The old East Moonta Methodist Church is on Deeble Street. It was built in 1872 and is a very important historical building. It was the first church in South Australia to have seating like an amphitheater, which is like a half-circle stadium. East Moonta also used to have its own school, but it closed a long time ago. In the past, the area even had its own football and cricket teams!
