Boors Plain is a small rural area in South Australia. It is located at the northern end of the Yorke Peninsula. You can find it east of Moonta and south of Kadina. This area is part of the Copper Coast Council. It was once known as Boors Plains.

What is Boors Plain?

The name and borders of Boors Plain were officially set in January 1999. The area is named after James Boor. He was a shepherd for Sir Walter Hughes. James Boor found copper, which led to the famous Wallaroo Mines. Today, the land in Boors Plain is mostly used for farming. This includes growing crops and raising animals.

A Look at Boors Plain's History

A small village used to be located on the road between Kadina and Cunliffe. A nearby quarry provided limestone. This stone was used to build structures in the Moonta and Wallaroo Mines.

Community Life in Boors Plain

  • Post Office: The Boors Plains Post Office opened in July 1882. It closed its doors in September 1899.
  • School: The Boors Plains School taught local children from 1879 to 1941.
  • Church: The Boors Plains Methodist Church was active from 1873 to 1967. It had three rooms. One was the church itself. Another was the school room. The third room was used for Sunday School or community events. Today, a special stone marker, called a memorial cairn, shows where the church once stood.
  • Sports: The Boors Plains Oval was a sports field. It was located on Moonta-Thrington Road. This spot was known as Stanways Corner. The Boors Plains Cricket Club played there from 1880 to 1965. The Boors Plains Tennis Club also played there. It closed during World War II.
  • Agricultural Bureau: Boors Plain had its own branch of the Agricultural Bureau. This group helped local farmers. It was very successful in the 1930s. In 1979, they even published a book. It celebrated their first 50 years.

Important Mining History

The Bald Hill 1864 Miners' Strike Site is in the western part of Boors Plain. This site is very important. It is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means it is a protected historical place.
