Exploring Kooroona's Features

Kooroona is a rural locality, which means it's a defined area, often with farms and open spaces. Its name and borders were officially set in January 1999. Before that, people knew this area by other names. It was sometimes called Copper Valley. It was also known as South Bower for a while.

A Glimpse into the Past

One important historical site in Kooroona is the Moonta Cemetery. This old cemetery is at the very northern edge of the area. It is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means it's a special place that is protected because of its history. Most of Kooroona is made up of land used for farming.

Kooroona's Mining History

Long ago, Kooroona was home to some mining activity. The South Bower Mining Company started a mine here. Later, around 1870, this company changed its name. It became the Copper Valley Mining Company. The mine itself was renamed South Hamley in about 1874. These mines were part of the rich copper history of the Yorke Peninsula.
