History of Hamlin

The town of Hamlin was first created as the town of Union. It was renamed Hamlin in 1861. This was done to honor Hannibal Hamlin, who was Abraham Lincoln's first vice president.

Before becoming Union, Hamlin was part of a larger area called Northampton. In 1807, the town of Murray was formed from Northampton. Then, on December 14, 1852, the area was split again. This created the towns of Union (which became Hamlin) and Clarkson.

A historic building, the North Star School District No. 11, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This means it's an important place to protect because of its history.
