The name of the town was changed to Hampton on February 11, 1909. Later, in 1931, Hampton added more land from Glen Gardner and Bethlehem Township.
Hampton was first settled around 1800. It is located near the Musconetcong River. By 1880, the town had a store, a hotel, and several shops. There was also a school and about 25 homes. Hampton used to be called "Junction" because two major train lines, the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, crossed paths here.
