A Look Back: Hampton's History
Long ago, the land where Hampton now stands was home to the Sauk and Meskwaki Native American tribes. You can still find ancient Native American mounds from the Woodland era within the village and nearby Illiniwek Forest Preserve.
In 1834, the area was first planned as a town called "Milan." This is not the same Milan that is 13 miles south in Illinois. The first "paper town" didn't sell well because the riverfront was very swampy. It was also right next to the northern end of the Rock Island Rapids. However, settlers drained the swamps by the late 1800s. The village was officially founded by 1900 and named Hampton.
One important historical building is Black's Store. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This store was the very first general store to open in Northwest Illinois.
