Hancock is a small place in Morgan County, West Virginia. It's called an "unincorporated community" or "hamlet." This means it's a small group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Hancock is located in the part of West Virginia known as the Eastern Panhandle.
About Hancock
Hancock is a quiet community found along the Potomac River. This river forms a natural border between West Virginia and Maryland. Hancock is located north of a town called Berkeley Springs.
Getting to Hancock
You can reach Hancock by taking Hancock Road, which is part of U.S. Route 522. Another way to get there is by using River Road, also known as West Virginia Secondary Route 1. This road runs right along the Potomac River.
There are other ways to access Hancock too. You can use Fairview Drive (West Virginia Secondary Route 2) if you are coming from Berkeley Springs. Another option is Pious Ridge Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 4), which connects from Ridersville on Martinsburg Road (West Virginia Route 9).
How Hancock Got Its Name
Hancock wasn't always called Hancock. It was first known as Brosius. In 1948, the name of its post office was changed to Hancock. This new name was chosen because the community is located right across the river from Hancock, Maryland. It's also near the main railway line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
