Hannes Þór Halldórsson (born on April 27, 1984) is an Icelandic filmmaker and a former professional football player. He was a key member of the Iceland national team. Hannes played in 77 international matches for his country. He also appeared in major tournaments like UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Hannes's Football Journey

Playing for Icelandic Clubs

Hannes started his football career in Iceland. He played for several clubs, including Leiknir, Afturelding, Stjarnan, Fram, and KR.

He joined KR when he was just five years old. At age 20, Hannes stopped playing football because of a shoulder injury. But he soon returned to the sport, joining Leiknir. This team was in the lower divisions of Icelandic football.

Hannes worked hard to improve his skills. He joined Stjarnan in 2006, which was in the second division. In 2007, he moved to Fram, a top-tier team. Hannes had a goal to play for a first-division team within three years. He also hoped to play football outside Iceland after that.

In 2011, he joined KR again. In his first season with KR, his team won both the league and the cup. This was a great achievement for Hannes.

Playing for Clubs Outside Iceland

Hannes's dream of playing abroad came true. In March 2012, he joined the Norwegian club SK Brann for a short time. He helped them when their main goalkeeper was injured.

In December 2013, Hannes moved to another Norwegian club, Sandnes Ulf. This was a big step, as he became a professional footballer in 2014. This meant football was now his full-time job.

In July 2015, Hannes signed a two-year contract with NEC, a club in the Dutch top league. Then, in July 2016, he joined Randers FC in Denmark.

Later, in July 2018, Hannes signed with Qarabağ FK in Azerbaijan. He left Qarabağ in April 2019.

Returning to Icelandic Football

In April 2019, Hannes returned to Iceland. He signed a four-year contract with Valur. He said he came back for family reasons and because of the long contract. He left Valur in November 2021.

On March 16, 2022, Hannes announced he was retiring from professional football. However, in June 2022, he agreed to help Víkingur Reykjavík. He joined them as a backup goalkeeper because their regular goalkeepers were injured.

Hannes played his first international match for Iceland in 2011. He kept a clean sheet, meaning the other team didn't score, in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Cyprus.

He quickly became the main goalkeeper for the national team. He played in all twelve matches during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Hannes was chosen for Euro 2016. This was Iceland's first time ever playing in a major football tournament. He played in their first match against Portugal, which ended in a 1–1 draw. Iceland did very well, reaching the knockout stage of the tournament.

In May 2018, Hannes was part of Iceland's team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. On June 16, 2018, he made a famous save. He stopped a penalty kick from Argentina's superstar, Lionel Messi. This match ended in a 1–1 draw, and Hannes was named the best player of the match.

On September 8, 2021, Hannes announced he was retiring from the national team. He had played 77 matches for Iceland.

Hannes's Life Outside Football

Hannes has a special talent besides football: he is a film director! He has worked on movies and commercials when he wasn't playing football.

He directed Iceland's video for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. Before he became a full-time professional footballer, his employer, Sagafilm, promised him his job back when he returned to Iceland.

Hannes also directed a commercial for Coca-Cola for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. His first full-length movie as a director was called Cop Secret. In 2022, he directed a commercial for N1 for the UEFA Women's Euro 2022. This commercial featured Icelandic footballer Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir.
