History of Hansen

Early Land Surveys

Back in the summer of 1851, special teams from the U.S. government started mapping the area. They were surveying the land. This means they carefully measured and drew the outlines of what would become the Town of Hansen. It was a square area, about six miles on each side.

Later that year, in November, another team came through. They marked all the section corners. These are important points that divide the land into smaller squares. The surveyors walked through thick woods and waded through swamps. They used tools like a Gunter's chain, which was a long metal chain for measuring distances, and a Solar compass, which helped them find directions using the sun.

First Description of the Land

After their work, the main surveyor wrote down what the land was like. He said that much of the area was swampy. He also noted that the soil was not very good for farming because it was poor and had many stones.

The trees were mostly large, but some pine trees were smaller. The streams in the area got their water from the swamps. They could rise and fall very quickly. The surveyor also listed different kinds of trees found there, like soft-maple, sugar pine, tamarack, alder, linn, oak, ash, and ironwood. He also mentioned finding blue flint stones.

Founding the Town

The Town of Hansen was officially created in 1901. It was named after a small railroad village that used to be there, also called Hansen. That village no longer exists today.
