Gibson Mill
Gibson Mill and the mill pond

Hardcastle Crags is a beautiful, wooded valley located in the Pennines mountains in West Yorkshire, England. It's a special place owned by the National Trust, a charity that looks after important natural and historical sites. This valley is about 2 miles (3 km) north of Hebden Bridge and 10 miles (16 km) west of Halifax. It's a great spot for exploring nature and history!

Gibson Mill: A Green History

Deep within the valley, about half a mile (0.8 km) from the entrance, you'll find Gibson Mill. This old cotton mill was built in the 1800s. It was one of the very first mills to use power at the start of the Industrial Revolution. This was a time when new machines changed how things were made.

Today, Gibson Mill is super cool because it shows how we can use clean, green energy. It runs completely on renewable power sources! This means it uses energy that won't run out and doesn't harm the planet.

The mill uses:

  • Water-powered turbines (like mini hydro-electric plants)
  • Solar panels (called photo voltaic panels)
  • A wood-burning boiler and a special wood-burning stove

Even the toilets are eco-friendly (composting toilets)! Plus, many materials inside the mill were recycled from local sources.

Gibson Mill is surrounded by 400 acres (1.6 km²) of amazing woodland. There are also 30 miles (48 km) of footpaths for you to explore. The mill itself is a historic building, meaning it's protected because of its importance. It reopened to visitors on September 24, 2005. You can visit and learn all about the mill and the people who used to work there.
