Hardin is a city in Montana, United States. It is the main city and county seat of Big Horn County. In 2020, about 3,818 people lived there. Hardin is located just north of the Crow Indian Reservation.

History of Hardin

The city of Hardin was named after Samuel Hardin. He was a friend of Charles Henry Morrill, who helped develop the area. Hardin officially became a city in 1911.

A person named Thomas D. Campbell ran a very large wheat farm near Hardin. It was 95,000 acres big! He was one of the first to use big machines for farming. Later, in 1937, the Holly Sugar Company built a factory in Hardin to process sugar beets.

Geography and Climate

Hardin covers an area of about 2.97 square miles (7.70 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The Little Bighorn River flows into the Bighorn River just east of Hardin.

The facility was completed but stayed empty for many years. In April 2019, the Bureau of Indian Affairs took over the facility. They changed its name to the Rocky Mountain Regional Detention Facility and began using it.
