By 1908, the people of Hardtner realized they needed a railroad line to connect with the outside world. Jacob Achenbach, one of the town's founders, helped create a company to build a train line. This line would go east to the town of Kiowa.

The new line needed to cross the tracks of a larger railroad company, the Santa Fe. The Santa Fe's manager tried to stop this by blocking the crossing spot with his private train car. However, he was told that the people of Hardtner had many cowboys ready to make sure the line was built. The manager moved his car, and the railroad line was completed.
