Haris Vučkić (born 21 August 1992) is a professional footballer from Slovenia. He plays as a forward or an attacking midfielder for the club Domžale.

Vučkić started by playing for Slovenia's youth teams. He later played for the main Slovenia national team. His first game for the senior team was against Scotland on 29 February 2012. In total, he played 12 games for the senior team and scored 5 goals.

Club Career

Starting at Domžale

Haris Vučkić was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He began his football journey at NK Domžale, a club from a small town in Slovenia.

He played his first game for the club on 24 May 2008, against Celje. He was not quite 16 years old yet. Because he was too young to play by the rules, his club had to pay a fine. When he turned 16 in August 2008, he officially joined the first team. He played four more games before moving to England.

Moving to Newcastle United

On 16 January 2009, Vučkić signed with Newcastle United, a team in the English Premier League. He was seen as a very promising young player in Europe. He signed a contract for three and a half years.

He first played for Newcastle's reserve team on 16 February 2009 and scored the winning goal. He made his debut for the main team on 26 August 2009 in a cup game against Huddersfield Town. A few days later, he played his first league game for the club in a 1–0 win over Leicester City.

In January 2011, Vučkić signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract with Newcastle. He made his Premier League debut on 28 August 2011 against Fulham. On 30 August 2012, he scored the winning goal against the Greek team Atromitos. This goal helped Newcastle get into the UEFA Europa League group stages.

Playing on Loan

In football, a "loan" is when a player temporarily plays for a different club. Vučkić went on loan to several clubs to get more playing experience.

Cardiff City

On 9 February 2012, Vučkić joined Cardiff City on a one-month loan. He scored his first professional goal for them in a game against Peterborough United.

Rotherham United

On 28 November 2013, Vučkić went on loan to Rotherham United. He helped the team get promoted to a higher league, the Championship.

Rangers

On 2 February 2015, Vučkić was one of five Newcastle players who went on loan to the Scottish club Rangers. He scored a goal in his very first game and scored nine more before he returned to Newcastle.

Wigan Athletic and Bradford City

Vučkić also had loan spells at Wigan Athletic in 2015 and Bradford City in 2016. At Bradford, he played for his former Rangers coach, Stuart McCall.

Later Career

On 23 June 2017, Vučkić left Newcastle and signed with the Dutch team Twente. He played there for three years.

On 19 August 2020, he moved to Spain and signed a three-year contract with Real Zaragoza. He has since played for HNK Rijeka in Croatia and Buriram United in Thailand, before returning to his first club, Domžale, in 2024.

International Career

Vučkić played for Slovenia's youth teams from a young age. In 2008, he scored three goals in three games for the under-17 team. Even though he was only 16, he also played for the under-19 team in 2009.

He made his first appearance for the main Slovenia senior team on 29 February 2012, in a friendly match against Scotland. On 7 October 2020, he scored his first goal for the national team in a 4–0 win against San Marino.

Personal Life

Vučkić's younger brother, Alen, is also a footballer. Vučkić was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. His father is of Bosnian heritage. Because of this, there were reports that the Bosnia and Herzegovina team wanted him to play for them.

However, Vučkić made it clear that he would always play for Slovenia. He said he was proud of his Bosnian roots but that Slovenia was his home country where he was born and grew up.

I will not hide that I am proud of my ancestry. I am proud of the fact that I am Bosnian thanks to my parents, but I am equally proud of the fact that I was born and grew up in Slovenia. ... Slovenia is my country. ... I never had any doubts on whom I want to play for.
