Haris Vučkić (born on August 21, 1992) is a professional footballer from Slovenia. He plays as a forward or an attacking midfielder. Currently, he plays for Domžale.
Haris also played for Slovenia's national teams at different age levels. He made his first appearance for the senior Slovenia team in 2012. He has played 12 games for his country and scored 5 goals.
Club Career
Starting at Domžale
Haris Vučkić was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He started playing football at NK Domžale when he was young. Domžale is a small town in central Slovenia.
He played his first game for the club on May 24, 2008. He was almost 16 years old at the time. He came into the game as a substitute. However, he was too young to play according to the rules. Because of this, his club had to pay a fine. After he turned 16 in August 2008, he was allowed to join the main team. He played four more league games there. Soon after, he signed with Newcastle United, a big club in England.
Time at Newcastle United
On January 16, 2009, Haris joined Newcastle United. This was a big move for him. He signed a contract for three and a half years. Many people thought he was one of the most promising young players in Europe.
He first played for Newcastle's reserve team in February 2009. He scored the winning goal in that game. He also scored his first goal for the Under-18 team. Haris made his first team debut for Newcastle on August 26, 2009. This was in a League Cup game. He then played his first league game a few days later.
Haris scored his first goal for Newcastle's senior team in a friendly game in July 2010. During the 2010–2011 season, he got more chances to play. He played well in League Cup matches, even earning a "Man of the Match" award in one game. In January 2011, he signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle.
He made his Premier League debut on August 28, 2011. He came on as a substitute but had to leave the game early due to an injury. Four months later, he returned to play. He also made his first start in the Premier League in December. On August 30, he scored a winning goal in a UEFA Europa League game. This helped Newcastle reach the group stages of the competition.
Loan to Cardiff City
In February 2012, Haris joined Cardiff City on a one-month loan. He played his first game for them on February 11. He scored his first goal for Cardiff in the next game. He returned to Newcastle in March because of injuries at his main club.
Loan to Rotherham United
On November 28, 2013, Haris went on loan to Rotherham United. He scored his first goal for Rotherham in December. His loan was extended until the end of the season. He helped Rotherham win promotion to the Championship by winning a play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
Loan to Rangers
In February 2015, Haris was one of five Newcastle players to join Rangers on loan. Rangers was playing in the Scottish Championship at the time. Haris scored on his debut for Rangers. He scored nine goals in total before returning to Newcastle.
Loan to Wigan Athletic
Haris joined Wigan Athletic on a loan for the whole season in September 2015.
Loan to Bradford City
On the last day of the summer transfer window in 2016, Haris joined Bradford City. He was reunited with his former coach, Stuart McCall. He scored his first goal for Bradford in October 2016. His loan ended in January 2017.
Playing for Twente
On June 23, 2017, Haris signed with Twente, a Dutch team. He joined them for free.
Moving to Real Zaragoza
On August 19, 2020, Haris signed a three-year contract with Real Zaragoza, a Spanish club.
Time at HNK Rijeka
In 2021, Haris went on loan to Rijeka in Croatia. He later joined them permanently in 2022.
Playing for Buriram United
From 2023 to 2024, Haris played for Buriram United in Thailand. He helped them win the Thai League 1, the Thai FA Cup, and the Thai League Cup in the 2022–23 season.
Return to Domžale
In 2024, Haris returned to his first club, Domžale.
International Career
Haris Vučkić played for Slovenia's youth national teams. In September 2008, he played for the Slovenia Under-17 team. He scored three goals in three games during the qualifiers for a European championship. Even though he was only 16, he also played for the Slovenia Under-19 team in July 2009.
In August 2010, Haris played his first game for the Slovenia Under-21 team.
He was called up to the senior Slovenia team in October 2010. However, he did not play in those matches and returned to the Under-21 team.
Haris made his official debut for the senior national team on February 29, 2012. This was in a friendly match against Scotland. He came into the game in the 61st minute.
On October 7, 2020, he scored his first goal for the senior team. It was in a 4–0 win against San Marino. He scored five goals for Slovenia in total.
Personal Life
Haris Vučkić has a younger brother named Alen, who is also a footballer. Haris was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. His father is of Bosnian descent. Because of this, there were reports that Bosnia and Herzegovina wanted him to play for their team.
However, Haris has always said that he is a Slovenian national team player. He is proud of his Bosnian background from his parents. But he is also very proud to be Slovenian, as he was born and grew up there. He has always said he would play for Slovenia if they called him. He explained that Slovenia is his country, where he grew up and made friends. He never doubted who he wanted to play for.
