Honoring a Hero: Harriet Tubman Park

A Special Place in Boston

Harriet Tubman Park is built on a triangular piece of land that used to be called Columbus Square. The Boston Parks and Recreation Department helped create this park. It was made possible with money from several groups, including the Browne Fund and the Henderson Foundation.

Art and History: Sculptures and Pavers

The park is designed to tell an important story. Its brick pathways have special bronze tiles, called pavers. These pavers show different parts of the Underground Railroad story. The Underground Railroad was a secret network of safe houses and routes. It helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the 1800s.

The park also features two important sculptures:

The Harriet Tubman Memorial

This statue is called the Harriet Tubman Memorial. It was created by an artist named Fern Cunningham. The sculpture helps us remember Harriet Tubman's courage and her fight for freedom.

Emancipation Sculpture

The second sculpture is named Emancipation. It was made by Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller. This artwork was created 50 years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation was an order that declared many enslaved people free during the American Civil War.

Underground Railroad Story Pavers

As you walk through the park, look down at the ground. You will see special bronze pavers. Each paver shows a different scene or symbol related to the Underground Railroad. They help visitors imagine the journeys and challenges faced by those seeking freedom.

Designed with Care

CBA Landscape Architects designed Harriet Tubman Park. Their design was so good that it won an award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects. The park is a beautiful and meaningful space in the city.

Part of a Historic Trail

Harriet Tubman Park is also a stop on the Boston Women's Heritage Trail. This trail connects many important places in Boston that celebrate the achievements of women. Visiting the park helps you learn about Harriet Tubman and other brave women in history.
