History of Harvey

Long ago, when the French ruled Louisiana, a man named Jean-Baptiste d'Estrehan owned the land where Harvey is now. He started a large farm called a plantation. He used people who were forced into slavery to dig a ditch. This ditch, later called the Harvey Canal, connected the Mississippi River to Bayou Barataria. This made it easier to travel and move goods.

Later, d'Estrehan paid German settlers to make the ditch wider. He paid them with small pieces of land. He built his home where the ditch met the river. He called this new settlement "Cosmopolite City."

Harvey was officially started by Joseph Hale Harvey. He renamed Cosmopolite City after his family. Joseph Harvey's wife, Louise Destrehan, was a great-granddaughter of Jean Baptiste d'Estrehan.

The Harvey family continued to build the canal and its locks. Locks are like water elevators that help boats move between different water levels. Their son, Horace Harvey, kept working on developing the area.
