The Hasbrouck House, also known as the Evelyn Samuels Memorial Building, is a historic home located in downtown Poughkeepsie, New York. It sits right next to the Amrita Club building. This special house was built in 1885 for Frank Hasbrouck, who was a local judge and historian.

A famous architect named Frederick Clarke Withers designed the house. It is a great example of the Romanesque Revival style. This style was popular in the late 1800s. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.

Cool Architecture Features

The Hasbrouck House is made of red brick. It has two and a half stories, plus a raised basement. Architect Frederick Clarke Withers added many interesting details. These details are typical of the Romanesque Revival style.

For example, the front porch is set back into the house. It has two round-headed arches. These arches are separated by a spiral column with a floral design. This column also has a Corinthian capital, which is a fancy top part.

Other cool features include brownstone window sills. There are also decorative stone bands, called courses, around the house. You can see an oriel window on the second floor. This type of window sticks out from the wall. There is also a five-sided dormer window on the third floor. The roofline has a parapet, which is a low protective wall.

Inside the House

The inside of the Hasbrouck House is still very much like it was when it was built. The original fireplace is still there. It has a brick chimney and shiny glazed tiles. The beautiful oak woodwork is also well-preserved.

These interior details show what homes looked like in the late 1800s. They give us a glimpse into the past.

Why is it Special?

The Hasbrouck House is the most important Romanesque-style building in Poughkeepsie. Other nearby buildings, like the New York State Armory and Harlow Row, have similar styles.

It's quite unusual to find a Romanesque house this big in a city the size of Poughkeepsie. This style was usually used for larger buildings in bigger cities. It was also common for places like prisons or military bases. This makes the Hasbrouck House even more unique.

Who Lives There Now?

In recent years, the house became the home of the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region. The United Way is a non-profit organization. They help people in the community.

The United Way named the building the Evelyn Samuels Memorial Building. This was done to honor Evelyn Samuels, who was a generous supporter of their work.
