History of Haskell
Haskell was founded near an older town called Sawokla. Sawokla was a Muscogee (Creek) Nation town. It already had a post office, a store, and a cotton gin.
Early Days and Growth
The land where Haskell was built belonged to Amos Rolland. He was a member of the Creek Nation. When the railroad was finished in 1904, the store and cotton gin moved from Sawokla to Haskell.
The first store in Haskell was started in a tent. It was run by two brothers from Syria. Haskell's first post office opened in 1902. Nat Lambertson, who owned a hardware store, was the first postmaster.
The railroad helped farmers send their crops to other markets. They shipped grain, hay, corn, melons, and cotton. By 1907, when Oklahoma became a state, 720 people lived in Haskell.
In 1909, the Robertson Memorial Presbyterian Church was built. It was named after a famous missionary family. This church building is still used today.
Oil Discovery and Modern Changes
In 1910, gas and oil were found near Haskell. This brought a lot of wealth to the town. Haskell soon got paved streets, sidewalks, electric lights, and water systems.
In 1969, a new highway, the Tulsa-Muskogee Turnpike, was built. It went around Haskell instead of through it. This meant fewer cars passed through town. Many local businesses lost money because of this change.
In March 2024, the people of Haskell voted for a new way to run their town. It changed from a "Town" to a "City Manager" form of government.
Haskell's Location
Haskell is located about 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Muskogee.
The town covers an area of about 2.2 square miles (5.7 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
