History of Hastings
In 1836, three business people bought land along the Thornapple River. They bought it from a banker named Eurotas P. Hastings. They divided the land into smaller pieces, and soon a small town started to grow.
In 1843, the state government chose Hastings to be the county seat for Barry County. This made it an important center for the area. The first local newspaper, the Barry County Pioneer, started in 1851. Another paper, the Republican Banner, began in 1856. This second paper is still published today as the Hastings Banner.
Hastings became an official village in 1855. About 300 people lived there at that time. On March 11, 1871, Hastings officially became a city. The Barry County Courthouse, a very important building, was built in 1893. It is still used today. The city grew steadily, reaching about 6,500 people by 1960.
