Hat Creek is a small community in Shasta County, California. It's known as a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's an area defined for gathering census information. Hat Creek is located at an elevation of about 3,422 feet (1,043 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 266 people lived there. This was a slight decrease from 309 people in 2010.
Hat Creek is a popular spot for tourists, especially those who enjoy fishing and camping. It is about 26 miles (42 km) north of Lassen Park. It is also about 15 miles (24 km) south of Burney Falls. The main activities in the area are related to tourism, fishing, and providing places for visitors to stay. Hat Creek is also home to the Hat Creek Radio Observatory. This is a special place where scientists listen for signals from space. It is run by the SETI Institute.
In 2021, the community was in danger from a large wildfire called the Dixie Fire.
