Hatillo barrio-pueblo is a special neighborhood in Hatillo, Puerto Rico. It's like the main downtown area or "seat" of the Hatillo municipality. In 2010, about 3,117 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, each town has a special neighborhood called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, fun festivals called Fiestas patronales (which means "patron saint festivals") are held in the main square.

The Central Plaza and Church in Hatillo
What is a Central Plaza?
The central plaza, or town square, is a super important place in Hatillo. It's where people gather for fun events, relax, and hang out from morning until night. It's a place for everyone to enjoy.
Long ago, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies said that these plazas should be big enough for all the people living nearby. They also said that the streets around the plaza should have comfy walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Church
Right across from the main plaza is the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen. This is a Roman Catholic church, and its name means "Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish" in English.
The church was built a long time ago, between 1824 and 1830. It got a bit damaged during an earthquake in 1918. Later, in 1930, a new concrete roof, a tower, and a dome were added to make it stronger.
Hatillo's History and Population Changes
Becoming Part of the United States
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After that, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Population Growth Over Time
In 1899, the United States government counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that Hatillo barrio-pueblo had 669 residents. The population has changed quite a bit over the years. Here's how it grew:
