Hatinh Langur range

The Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis) is a type of monkey that lives in Vietnam. It is a highly endangered animal, meaning it is in great danger of disappearing forever. These langurs live in special forests that have lots of limestone rocks.

Most Hatinh langurs are found in a place called Quảng Bình Province. Recently, a small group was also found in the Quảng Trị Province. Even though its name includes "Hatinh," this monkey is not known to live in the Hà Tĩnh Province. Local people from the Van Kieu minority call this monkey 'Con Cung', which means "black, cliff-dwelling monkey with a long tail."

What is a Hatinh Langur?

The Hatinh langur looks a lot like its close relative, the François' langur. However, the Hatinh langur has white stripes on its cheeks that usually go all the way behind its ears and onto its neck. Each langur can look a little different, though! Its fur is mostly black, but it is not shiny and can look a bit brownish.

Daily Life of the Hatinh Langur

The Hatinh langur is a diurnal animal, which means it is active during the day. It spends most of its time in trees, making it largely arboreal. These langurs are very social and like to live in groups. These groups usually have 2 to 15 langurs, but sometimes they can have as many as 30!

How Scientists Classify the Hatinh Langur

For a while, scientists thought the Hatinh langur was just a type of subspecies of the François' langur. But in 1995, a scientist named Bradon-Jones said it should be its own full species. Another scientist, Colin Groves, agreed in 2005. However, in 2004, both scientists listed it as a subspecies again.

New studies looking at the langur's genes suggest it might actually be a subspecies of the Laotian langur. Also, how the Hatinh langur looks (morphology) and its genes suggest that the Indochinese black langur is just a different form (or morph) of the Hatinh langur.
