How Haverhill Became a Town
In 1949, about 50 families living in the area decided they wanted to form their own town. Many of these early settlers were originally from Haverhill, Massachusetts. This is why they chose the name Haverhill for their new town.
A special vote was held on May 3, 1950, to decide if the area should become an official town. Out of 65 registered voters, 59 showed up to vote. The result was 42 votes in favor and 17 against. This meant Haverhill officially became a town!

After the vote, Ray Cox became Haverhill's first mayor. Other important leaders included Mrs. Fred Raulerson as the town clerk and Tom Steele as the town marshal. Don Boyd, Henry Franklin, Paul Huffman, Myron V. Kelly, and A. J. Ward were the first town council members.
The first official count of the town's population happened in 1960. It showed that 442 people lived in Haverhill at that time. In the mid-1960s, construction began on a town hall. This building was finished in August 1967 and cost $25,000.
