Hayfork is a small community in Trinity County, California, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area counted by the census bureau. In 2020, about 2,324 people lived there.

Hayfork's Name History
Hayfork has had a few different names over time. It was first called Nor'el pom by the Wintu people. This name means "big valley at base of the mountain." Later, it was known as Kingbury, then Haytown. Finally, it got its current name, Hayfork, because of a nearby stream called Hayfork Creek.
Hayfork's Past
An important event in Hayfork's history happened in 1921. This was when the very first Trinity County Fair was held. The Governor of California at that time, William Stephens, even attended the fair. [1]
Geography of Hayfork
Hayfork is located in a valley at about 2,310 feet (704 meters) above sea level. You can find it at these coordinates: 40°34′17″N 123°8′48″W / 40.57139°N 123.14667°W.
The community covers a total area of about 72.1 square miles (186.8 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny bit (0.03%) being water.
Hayfork's Climate
Hayfork has a type of weather called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. On climate maps, this is shown as Csb.
Even though summers are warm, the temperature can change a lot between day and night. This is called diurnal temperature variation. In winter, the temperature changes are big enough to cause frost at night. Frost can happen from mid-September to early June. Sometimes, it even frosts in July or August, which is unusual for this type of climate.
It gets quite hot in summer, with temperatures often going above 90°F (32°C). In winter, temperatures usually stay above freezing, but they can drop below 0°F (-18°C) about three times every ten years.
Hayfork gets most of its rain during the cooler months. Snow usually falls in higher areas, but Hayfork, being at 2,323 feet (708 meters), can get some snow too. The most snow recorded in one month was 77.7 inches (1.97 meters) in January 1916!

People of Hayfork
