Journey of the Hazel Brook
The Hazel Brook starts its journey at Cribbs Causeway in South Gloucestershire. From there, it flows south.
Through Towns and Estates
As it travels, the river passes by the western side of Filton Aerodrome. It then goes through the areas of Brentry and Henbury.
After Henbury, the Hazel Brook flows through a deep valley with steep sides, called a limestone gorge. This gorge is part of the beautiful Blaise Castle estate.
Joining the Trym
The river continues south through two lakes within the estate. Finally, it joins the River Trym at a place called Coombe Dingle.
Understanding the Water Flow
The Hazel Brook's water flow is affected by the land around it.
Water Run-off and Silt
Rainwater that flows over the ground, especially from big shopping areas like Cribbs Causeway, can carry a lot of fine dirt and mud. This is called silt. This silt can slow down the river's flow. It can also increase the risk of flooding further downstream in the River Trym.
Solving the Silt Problem
To help with this problem, a special reservoir was built near Cribbs Causeway. It's called the Catbrain attenuation reservoir. An attenuation reservoir helps to hold back some of the water. This stops too much water and silt from rushing into the river all at once. This has helped to reduce the flooding risk.
River Cleanliness
The city council regularly checks the water in the Hazel Brook. Their tests show that the water is quite clean.
