Head of the Harbor is a small village in Suffolk County, New York. It is located on the north shore of Long Island. In 2020, about 1,520 people lived there.
The village is entirely within the Town of Smithtown. However, the northern part of the village is also part of the Three Village Central School District. This school district is in the nearby Town of Brookhaven.
Near the border with Stony Brook Village, Head of the Harbor is home to the Avalon Nature Preserve. This is a large, privately owned park with 216 acres. It has many trails and landmarks for people to explore. Because it is so close to Stony Brook and has lots of trees, the northern part of Head of the Harbor feels like an extension of Stony Brook itself.
Village History
Head of the Harbor became an official village in 1928. This means it gained its own local government.
Geography and Location
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers a total area of about 3.0 square miles (7.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 2.8 square miles (7.27 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.2 square miles (0.59 square kilometers), is water.
To the north of the village, you will find Stony Brook Harbor. This is a beautiful body of water.
