Hearst (once called Travelers Home) is a small place in Mendocino County, California. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community.

Hearst is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) north-northwest of Potter Valley. It sits at an elevation of about 420 meters (1,378 feet) above sea level.

What is Hearst?

Hearst is a quiet farming community located near Willits. The area is mostly made up of large farms and ranches. Many landowners here also offer places for visitors to stay.

People can enjoy lots of outdoor activities in Hearst. These include camping, hunting, and fishing. You can also go trekking, which means long walks or hikes.

Hearst is also known by another name, Emandal. This name comes from the Emandal Resort, which is a large cabin resort and farm in the area.

A Look Back: Hearst's History

Hearst used to be a busier place. At its busiest time, it had two hotels. These hotels were on opposite sides of the Eel River. There was also a schoolhouse and a post office.

The Old Bridge

In 1890, a bridge was built over the Eel River. This bridge helped the stagecoach line. Stagecoaches carried people and mail between Willits and Covelo.

The Post Office and Its Name

A post office served Hearst from 1891 until 1953. It moved to a new spot in 1898. The community of Hearst was named to honor Senator George Hearst. He was a famous politician and businessman.

Kinsner Soda Spring

About one mile west of Hearst, there was a place called the Kinsner Soda Spring. This spring used to produce and sell drinking water.
