Covelo (pronounced KOH-və-loh) is a small community in Mendocino County, California, United States. It's called a "census-designated place" (CDP) because it's a special area defined by the government for counting people.

Covelo is located about 14 miles (23 km) east-northeast of Laytonville. It sits at an elevation of 1,398 feet (426 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 1,394 people lived there. A part of Covelo, about 405 acres (1.64 km²), is also part of the Round Valley Indian Reservation.

Exploring Covelo's Location

Covelo is found in the northeastern part of Mendocino County. You can reach it by taking California State Route 162. This road goes southwest for 29 miles (47 km) to U.S. Route 101 near Longvale.

To the east, you can take Mendocino Pass Road. This road, which becomes Alder Springs Road, travels about 66 miles (106 km) over the mountains. It goes through the Mendocino National Forest to Elk Creek. Much of this road is gravel.

Land and Water in Covelo

The community of Covelo covers a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.4 km²). Most of this area, about 99.40%, is land. Only a small part, 0.60%, is water. Mill Creek flows through Covelo and Round Valley. This creek then empties into the Middle Fork of the Eel River.

Covelo is also home to the Covelo American Viticultural Area. This is a special region known for growing grapes for wine.

Covelo's Climate and Weather

Covelo has a type of weather called a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has four distinct seasons. Summers are usually dry, while winters are rainy.

Winters in Covelo are generally mild. Even though snow often falls on nearby mountains like Anthony Peak, it rarely snows in the valley itself. The temperature can change a lot between day and night, especially in the summer. In winter, this change can lead to many air frosts, where the air temperature drops below freezing.

The History of Covelo

Covelo started in 1860 when the town's first store opened. The post office was established ten years later, in 1870.

There are different ideas about where the name "Covelo" came from. Some people thought it was named after a village in Switzerland. However, there isn't a village with that exact name there. It might be a misspelling of Covolo, which is a fort in Italy near Switzerland. Another idea is that it could be named after a village in Spain called Covelo. There's also a place called Covello in southern Italy.
